Postal Service Meeting a Budget

It is about time that a branch of our government start taking fiscal responsibility for its profit or loss. The Postal service has lost an extremely huge amount of money this year and now there finally going to do something about it. Well let the postal service deal with some of the real business decisions that you and I the regular middle class have to deal with on a regular basis. Example working irregular shifts, having an day off during the week so weekends time can be covered with out premium pay or overtime. The postal service has been a cash cow for so long and people employed there have been accustom to being over paid with fantastic benefits and for the most part have very little hardships to deal with. Now, I know some of you work at a counter helping people and do not get 24 dollars an hour. your lucky to make minimum wage. How would that type of money help you out right now? The postal service could put all the full time employees on salaried positions and then control most of it expenditures for labor, which every big corporation says is its largest expense. The postal service is saying the Internet has been the cause of its demise, well its been the competition. The postal service refused until now to do nothing to change its poor budget habits. Now it wants us to feel sorry for its predicament and I just can not do it. If I ran my business into the ground and expected bailout money every year why would I change what I was doing? There wouldn't be the need to change because I would know that the money would come to make everything right. Well isn't that a great life of no worries to not be accountable for anything. Please let me go there and live in that zip code. But for real people like you and me there is no place like that and never will be, because we are the backbone of this country and we're what makes this country stand up straight and tall. Helping out a governmental agency that is faltering is one thing, but to bailout it out year after year is just plain and simple ridiculous. At least now the postal service is trying to make changes to be fiscally responsible but don't bring it back on the people, do your job make the necessary changes to provide the same service. And by the way Mr. Postmaster welcome to the everyday world of the middle class.

  1. I agree with you too a degree. The postal service has been overpaid and because it is a government job, technically, they do get fantastic benefits and a ton of days off. The problem I see with a big post office shake up is the same cost we shell out in taxes to pay for the postal services mistakes will come back to us in other ways. If the post office is going to be run like a business the cost of stamps and general mailings is going to skyrocket. Periodicals that take advantage of low cost mailing will be charged huge sums to cover the difference. That charge will be passed right along to the consumer.

Not to mention that yes, the post office is dysfunctional but it still provides a necessary service for many. Many older Americans on limited incomes do not have access to computers or the internet and still do all their bills by paper and check. If the cost of post for these people on a fixed income goes up it could have ripple repercussions through the entire economy.
