The open admission policy at HACC is a good thing for all people. If you just graduated from high school or recently received your GED you might want to see what your limits are in the real world of academia. You may not know what you would like to be when you grow up, for many people do not know even as they become older and possibly wiser.
It could be true that you were not the best student in high school but your priorities and interests have changed and you need that opportunity to prove to yourself, you can succeed in an environment that can be very demanding yet rewarding. HACC's open admission policy allows you the opportunity to find out. It could be a complete waste of your time an effort, but at least you will know your academic limits.
Your situation may be different as you could be an older student looking to be better trained in your industry. Trying to become more valuable to your employer and attain more skills that could be a goal that you have set for yourself. This effort may keep you from the unemployment line. HACC's open admissions policy allows you to achieve your goals.
Many people are being laid off due to the economy and you may be investigating a new career in a new industry. Trying to fill out your working years as a productive citizen. The open admission policy should be looked upon as a good thing. This type of education can be the most challenging, because of all the unknown variables. There are many reasons you can be glad that HACC has an open admission which allows you the chance to investigate your curiosities.
When all is said and done HACC is providing a service and should get paid for the service they provide. It should not matter what your level of education was, if you meet the requirements and want to attend then by all means you should be able to. This is not highway robbery, it is paying for the service and opportunity of trying to make something of yourself.
There could be people who tell you, your grades are just not good enough to go to HACC and you will not do well, but if you do not try how will you ever know what your real abilities are. Please do not take up space for somebody that can put a complete education to work. When someone tells me I cannot do something, that equates to a challenge for me just to prove them wrong. This is the best type of motivator from my personal experience.
There will be many people from where you work probably tell you that a HACC course does not mean that much because HACC lets anybody in so why bother. This is just a bad idea and do not put yourself through the hassle. HACC will just take your money and you will never see any return from your effort.
HACC is out there retraining people just to get the money from the state and it does not care where the funds come from public or private. All the people being retrained cannot keep their jobs, how are they going to complete college training. This not only is an open door policy, but a revolving door policy.
My personal view will not change, this is a great program, do not mock it.
